Mclaren

McLaren's Accelerator division applies their Formula One race simulation and modelling expertise to commercial challenges for global partners.

A global pharmaceutical company needed to sharpen their product launch strategies and reduce time to peak sales across multiple annual releases.

McLaren Accelerator were engaged to apply race-winning simulation expertise to model and optimise these strategies at scale.

Working with McLaren's Technical Project Leads, I rapidly designed and iterated data visualisations to surface insights and guide key decisions.

We delivered a bespoke simulation package with the potential to cut launch timescales by months and reduce costs by millions.

RealWear

RealWear

RealWear Inc, produce an industry-leading hands-free wearable headset for frontline workers, industrial engineers and medical professionals.

As the principal User Experience designer at RealWear, I championed the user experience across RealWear's devices, apps and platforms. I was involved in the design process end-to-end, engaging with stakeholders across the business. Below are a few of the varied projects I created for.

Cloud MDM

RealWear needed a cloud platform to give enterprise clients full control over their fleet of deployed industrial headsets.

Industrial clients managing thousands of deployed headsets had no centralised way to handle firmware updates, security policies or device monitoring at scale.

Design and build a cloud-based MDM platform covering device registration, settings management, firmware updates and monitoring — for a fleet of 69,000 headsets.

Working with RealWear's engineering team, I designed the UX architecture, user flows and high-fidelity interfaces to make complex device management tasks feel intuitive.

The platform gave clients visibility and control across their entire fleet. UserPilot telemetry was used to identify friction points and drive a measurable increase in feature adoption.

Navigator OS

A UI refresh for RealWear's device OS — giving industrial workers full, hands-free control of their headsets in demanding environments.

RealWear headsets run a custom Android OS built for hands-free, voice-controlled operation — but key UI patterns had fallen behind the demands of frontline users.

Redesign core device features to improve usability and efficiency, working within the strict constraints of a wearable screen and voice-only interaction model.

I designed end-to-end across the feature set — from user flows and wireframes to high-fidelity UI — navigating the unique constraints of a wearable display and voice-only interaction.

The refreshed UI meaningfully improved interaction quality and became the benchmark for RealWear's third-party app certification standards.

RealWear One

Mobile companion app for RealWear's hands-free devices — unifying device management, onboarding, and remote-expert video in a single cohesive experience.

RealWear's existing companion apps were fragmented across devices, inconsistent in experience, and missing key features users needed in the field.

Design a unified companion app from the ground up — covering first-time setup, ongoing device management, and deep integration with RealWear's video solution.

I led end-to-end UX across the product: aligning with senior stakeholders on scope, mapping complex user journeys, and delivering high-fidelity designs and interactive prototypes.

The new app transformed onboarding from a pain point into a strength, unified the device management experience, and brought remote-expert video into the core product flow.

Creation of an interactive microsite for Coca Cola's ticket competition for the London 2012 Olympics where the prize changed every 2012 seconds.

Working within strict Olympic brand guidelines, I designed the animations, transitions and prize-reveal interactions that kept visitors coming back before each countdown reset.

Who am I

Temporary Northerner, London escapee, Bristolian wannabe, Cornish forever

I'm Max. A professional digital designer since 2003. Started my career working in agencies back when layouts meant tables and the first tech bubble had only just popped, then a move to the capital for a glorious decade or so of freelance and contracting.

A trip round the world, landing in Bristol for start-ups and SaaS and the new world of post-lockdown opportunities. Along the way I've worked for a hugely diverse range of clients, from the very biggest multi-nationals, to fledgling enterprises, tech scale-ups and charities for good measure.

When not working I love adventures outside, be that surfing, cycling, climbing, snowboarding or hiking. I'm also rather keen on Lego, dancing, tea, and proper cider.
